H-MTD to HSD Automotive Ethernet Cable Series
Premier Cable's H-MTD to HSD Automotive Ethernet Cable Series is developed for automotive electronics engineering, high-speed vehicle-network validation and cross-platform interface integration. Four gender combinations are available:
H-MTD Male → HSD Male
H-MTD Female → HSD Male
H-MTD Male → HSD Female
H-MTD Female → HSD Female
The series addresses a common vehicle-development challenge:
two devices may support compatible high-speed data technologies while using different physical connector platforms-H-MTD on one side and HSD on the other.
ECUs, ADAS controllers, cameras, gateways, Automotive Ethernet switches, domain controllers and laboratory test equipment may come from different platforms or suppliers. Replacing PCB connectors or rebuilding an entire prototype vehicle harness solely to accommodate this physical-interface difference can increase engineering time and cost.
An H-MTD-to-HSD adapter cable creates the required physical bridge in one preassembled harness, reducing temporary jumper wiring, stacked adapters and repeated prototype-harness modifications.
Rosenberger specifies H-MTD as a 100-ohm differential automotive high-speed interconnect platform supporting technologies including 100BASE-T1, 1000BASE-T1, 2.5/5/10GBASE-T1 and multiple SerDes protocols. Rosenberger HSD is likewise a 100-ohm high-speed platform supporting Ethernet, USB, LVDS, APIX, FPD-Link, GMSL and other automotive data technologies.
The series should therefore be understood as a:
High-Speed Automotive Physical Interface Adapter
rather than an:
Active Ethernet Protocol Converter.
Successful communication still requires compatible PHY, protocol, pin assignment, differential-pair definition, characteristic impedance and complete channel requirements at both ends.

H-MTD Female to HSD Female
The H-MTD Female → HSD Female version provides female interfaces on both ends and is intended for systems where the H-MTD-side and HSD-side equipment both use male connectors.
It is particularly useful on development benches, for example when connecting an H-MTD male ECU, switch or controller to an HSD male test interface, harness or development module.
Its key value is to resolve a male-to-male equipment mating mismatch while simultaneously transitioning between the H-MTD and HSD physical connector platforms.
H-MTD Male to HSD Female
The H-MTD Male → HSD Female version is designed to connect equipment with an H-MTD female port to modules or harnesses using an HSD male interface.
In ECU, Automotive Ethernet switch, gateway and test systems, this configuration provides a direct physical link when the main device uses an H-MTD female interface while the mating harness or test adapter uses HSD male, reducing the need for additional gender-changing adapters.

H-MTD Female to HSD Male
The H-MTD Female → HSD Male configuration is designed for connections between H-MTD male equipment and HSD female devices or interfaces.
Typical uses include interconnection between camera controllers, ADAS modules, domain controllers and laboratory HSD test ports.
Compared with manually re-terminating high-speed contacts in the field, a preassembled adapter is better suited to rapid prototype changes and helps reduce pinout and shielding errors associated with temporary wiring.
H-MTD Male to HSD Male
The H-MTD Male → HSD Male version provides male connectors on both ends for direct connection between an H-MTD female device port and an HSD female device interface.
Many PCB headers, ECU receptacles and panel-mounted interfaces in Automotive Ethernet test benches use female connectors, making this dual-male configuration a practical bridge between two female device ports.
It is especially useful in development environments where ECUs, cameras, gateways or control modules are frequently exchanged.

Typical Applications
Product Features
Complete Four Gender Combinations
Female to female, male to female, female to male and male to male combinations allow engineers to match different ECU, camera, gateway, harness and test equipment interfaces without unnecessary gender adapters.
100Ω High Speed Automotive Interconnect Platforms
Both H-MTD and HSD are Rosenberger high speed differential interconnect platforms with 100 ohm impedance characteristics, providing a physical foundation for high speed automotive data links.
Passive Interface Conversion
The assembly does not use active protocol conversion electronics. Instead, defined pin mapping provides the physical interface bridge while the connected equipment retains its original PHY and protocol architecture.
Designed for High Speed Automotive Data Applications
Rosenberger identifies ADAS, autonomous driving, 4K cameras and high-resolution displays among H-MTD applications, while HSD supports display, camera, USB, Ethernet and infotainment systems, making cross-platform adapters particularly useful in automotive development.
Product Advantages
● Reduce Cross Platform Integration Costs
When an existing ECU uses H-MTD while the test environment uses HSD, engineers can connect both platforms with an adapter cable instead of redesigning the PCB or replacing the entire vehicle harness.
● Reduce Intermediate Connections in High Speed Data Links
Compared with a multi stage configuration consisting of an H-MTD adapter, intermediate harness and HSD adapter, an integrated H-MTD to HSD cable assembly reduces mating points and additional adapter structures, helping simplify high speed data link architecture.
● Improve Test Equipment Switching Efficiency
Four male female combinations allow engineers to quickly switch cable assemblies according to different ECU and test equipment interfaces without field pin modifications or connector re-termination.
● Reduce Risks in Manual High Speed Harness Assembly
High speed differential connections require accurate pin mapping, shielding, pair geometry and consistent termination. Factory built cable assemblies provide better control over these critical manufacturing variables than temporary laboratory jumper wiring.
Four-Version Quick Comparison
| Product | H-MTD Side | HSD Side |
| H-MTD Female → HSD Female | Female | Female |
| H-MTD Male → HSD Female | Male | Female |
| H-MTD Female → HSD Male | Female | Male |
| H-MTD Male → HSD Male | Male | Male |
H-MTD and HSD are not the same physical interface.
HSD is an established shielded automotive high-speed platform supporting Ethernet, USB, LVDS, FPD-Link, GMSL and other protocols, while H-MTD is a newer compact modular differential system covering Automotive Ethernet and high-bandwidth SerDes applications.
Vehicle development can therefore involve:
Existing Module = HSD while New ECU / Domain Controller = H-MTD or the reverse.
The engineering requirement in this situation is usually not a protocol converter, but a correctly mapped high-speed:
H-MTD ↔ HSD Physical Interface Bridge.
Product FAQ
Is an H-MTD-to-HSD Cable a Protocol Converter ?
No. It is a passive cable assembly that provides physical interface adaptation between H-MTD and HSD. It does not actively convert communication protocols such as Ethernet, USB, FPD-Link, or GMSL.
Why Are Four Gender Combinations Available ?
Different ECUs, PCB headers, harnesses, and test equipment may use different male/female interface configurations. Female/female, male/female, female/male, and male/male versions allow direct matching to the actual device interfaces, reducing the need for additional gender changers.
Are Both H-MTD and HSD 100Ω Interconnect Systems ?
Rosenberger specifies both H-MTD and HSD as 100-ohm high-speed differential interconnect systems. However, a 100-ohm connector platform does not automatically guarantee the target performance of every assembled cable. The complete link must still be validated with the correct cable, pin mapping, shielding, termination, and channel design.
What Other Protocols or High-Speed Signals Can HSD Support ?
The Rosenberger HSD platform can be used for various automotive high-speed data applications, including USB, Ethernet, LVDS, APIX, FPD-Link, GMSL, and PCIe. HSD is therefore a high-speed physical interconnect platform rather than a specific communication protocol itself.
What Is the Maximum Data Rate Supported by H-MTD ?
Rosenberger currently specifies the broader H-MTD platform for frequencies up to 20 GHz and data rates up to 56 Gbps. However, this represents the capability of the H-MTD platform and should not be treated as the guaranteed rating of every H-MTD-to-HSD cable assembly. Actual performance depends on the connector version, cable, length, termination, pin mapping, and complete link validation.
