D-Sub Cable Assemblies for Industrial, Test & Legacy I/O

Explore D-Sub and related high-density I/O cable assemblies for industrial controls, data acquisition, automated test, machine vision, server and storage management, legacy serial equipment and display interfaces. This collection includes 9-, 15-, 25-, 37-, 44-, 50-, 62- and 78-position D-Sub assemblies, Micro-D I/O pigtails, GPIB instrument cables, LFH multiport breakouts, serial and null-modem cables, angled connector versions and custom cable assemblies.

Choose a cable by the exact mating connector, gender, pin assignment, signal function, cable length and mechanical installation requirement. A D-Sub shell or pin count identifies the physical connector format only; it does not by itself confirm RS-232, CAN, VGA, GPIO, GPIB, power, trigger or another electrical interface.

Important selection note: Two cables with the same 9-pin or 25-pin D-Sub appearance can use completely different pinouts and serve different equipment. Confirm the equipment model, connector series, mating gender, screw-lock type, wiring diagram and intended signal function before ordering. A passive cable or adapter only carries a defined wiring arrangement; it does not convert one communication protocol or signal type into another unless an active converter is specifically stated.

How to Select a D-Sub Cable Assembly

The correct D-Sub cable is defined by the connected equipment and the required wiring function, not by connector appearance alone. Start with the device documentation or the original cable, then verify the connector family, position count, gender, pin mapping, cable construction and available installation space before selecting a replacement or custom assembly.

1. Identify the equipment and signal role
Confirm whether the cable is used for serial communication, GPIO, trigger, power, data acquisition, GPIB instrument control, multiport breakout, analog video or another defined function.
2. Match the exact connector family
Check the connector series, position count, mating gender, shell geometry, screw-lock thread and clearance. Standard D-Sub, high-density D-Sub, Micro-D, LFH, GPIB and DVI are different connector systems.
3. Verify pinout and cable construction
Compare the actual wire mapping, signal pairs, shield / drain-wire connection, conductor size, optional power wires and any cross-over or split-channel arrangement with the equipment requirements.
4. Confirm mechanical requirements
Select cable length, straight or angled outlet, jacket diameter, strain relief, overmolding and panel / enclosure clearance according to the actual installation location.
Connector shape is not protocol confirmation: A DB9 port can be used for RS-232, RS-422, RS-485, CAN, a proprietary console connection or another device-specific interface. Likewise, a cable fitted with RJ45 at one end does not automatically carry Ethernet. Confirm the specified wiring and electrical function for both pieces of equipment before connection.

Common D-Sub and Related I/O Cable Types

DB9 / DB25 Serial Cables
Used for specified serial, console, PLC programming, storage management and legacy equipment connections. Select a straight-through, crossover or null-modem mapping only as required by the two connected devices.
Micro-D I/O & Pigtail Cables
Compact, high-density assemblies for cameras, frame grabbers, test modules, controllers and embedded equipment. Open-end versions support controlled integration into a terminal block, I/O module or custom harness.
DB37 / DB44 / DB62 / DB78 Breakouts
Multi-channel cable assemblies that distribute a dense equipment-side connector to multiple DB9, DB25 or other connections. Verify each channel number, connector gender and mapping before replacing a breakout cable.
GPIB / IEEE-488 Instrument Cables
Used for compatible automated-test controllers, PXI / PXIe modules and GPIB instruments. Confirm the controller-side interface, standard GPIB connector, cable length and approved equipment compatibility.
LFH & High-Density Test-System Cables
LFH160, LFH200 and comparable high-density interface cables are often used in switching, PXI / SCXI and multi-channel test systems. These should be selected by the system's exact connector and channel assignment.
VGA & Other Display Interfaces
HDB15 VGA uses a D-Sub-style interface for analog video. DVI uses a different connector system and should be selected by its specified DVI format, resolution requirement and equipment port rather than as a D-Sub equivalent.

Custom D-Sub Cable Assembly Support

For replacement assemblies, prototype builds, test fixtures, machine retrofits and new equipment integration, custom D-Sub cable assemblies can be evaluated from confirmed electrical and mechanical requirements. Common options include connector combinations, position count, gender, pinout, cable length, shielding, breakout construction, pigtail preparation, right-angle outlet, overmolding, screw-lock hardware, labels and strain relief.

FAQ

Is every DB9 cable an RS-232 cable?

No. DB9 describes a 9-position D-Sub connector format commonly used by different electrical interfaces. It may be wired for RS-232, RS-422, RS-485, CAN, a console port or another device-specific function. Use the equipment documentation or a confirmed cable drawing to select the correct assembly.

What is the difference between a standard D-Sub and a Micro-D cable?

Micro-D is a smaller, high-density connector family often used where space, vibration resistance and compact I/O routing are important. It is not mechanically interchangeable with a standard D-Sub connector, even when the position count appears similar.

Does a DB9-to-RJ45 or DB25-to-RJ45 cable convert serial signals to Ethernet?

Not by itself. A passive cable only routes conductors according to a defined pinout. It does not create an Ethernet network connection or translate a serial protocol unless an active converter, terminal server or gateway is explicitly included.

How do I know whether I need a straight-through or null-modem serial cable?

It depends on the DTE / DCE role and documented interface requirement of the devices. A straight-through cable and a null-modem cable can use the same connector shape but cross different conductors. Check the device manuals or original cable pinout before choosing.

Can one DB37, DB44, DB62 or DB78 connector be broken out to multiple ports?

Yes, multiport breakout assemblies are commonly used when a dense connector carries several defined channels. The exact number of breakout ports, connector genders and wiring assignments must match the source equipment and every connected channel.

Can you reproduce or customize an existing D-Sub cable?

Yes. Send the original part number, equipment details, clear photos, a wiring drawing or a sample. The more complete the connector and pinout information, the more accurately the replacement or custom cable can be checked before quotation.
