Custom Military Cable Assembly Capabilities

Each military circular connector cable assembly is evaluated according to the complete connector designation, shell style, shell size, insert arrangement, contact type, cable construction and wiring requirements.

Connector compatibility and electrical suitability cannot be determined from contact count alone. The complete part numbers, shell size, insert arrangement, contact size, alternate insert position, pin or socket contact type, mating interface, voltage and current requirements, and required pinout should be confirmed before production.

Connector and Cable Options

Available options include connector series, exact connector part number, plug or receptacle shell style, pin or socket contact type, shell size, insert arrangement, straight or right-angle connector or backshell orientation, cable length, conductor size, shielding structure, strain relief, overmolding, open-wire termination, labels and custom pin-to-pin wiring.

Understanding Shell Style and Contact Type

Plug and receptacle describe the connector shell style, while pin and socket describe the installed contact type. These terms should not be used interchangeably.

A plug connector may contain either pin contacts or socket contacts. For the 5015 and 26482 Series examples shown on this page, the P and S suffixes identify pin and socket contact types rather than plug and receptacle shell styles. Complete part-number definitions should still be confirmed against the applicable connector documentation.

How to Specify a Military Cable Assembly

Selection Item

Information to Provide

Connector Series

5015 Series, 26482 Series I or another specified circular connector family.

End A Connector

Complete connector part number, including shell style, shell size, insert arrangement, class and contact suffix.

End B Connector

Complete connector part number or the required open-wire, stripped, tinned, ferruled, terminal-terminated or equipment-side interface. The final termination method should be confirmed according to the wire size and project drawing.

Shell and Contact Type

Plug or receptacle shell style and pin or socket contact type for each cable end.

Insert Arrangement

Shell size, insert code, contact count, contact size and required alternate insert position.

Electrical Requirements

Required operating voltage, current per circuit, signal type and any applicable creepage, clearance or insulation requirements.

Cable Length

Required finished length and the measurement datum, such as connector face to connector face or cable exit to cable exit.

Wire Construction

Conductor count, wire gauge, conductor colors, insulation, jacket material and flexibility requirements.

Pinout

Pin-to-pin wiring table, circuit function, wire color assignment and any unused, commoned or internally connected contacts.

Shielding and Grounding

Unshielded, overall shielded or individually shielded construction, together with the required shield termination and grounding method.

Connector Orientation and Protection

Straight or right-angle connector or backshell orientation, strain relief, heat shrink, overmolding or other mechanical protection.

Operating Environment

Temperature range, moisture exposure, vibration, oil or chemical resistance, outdoor use and other environmental conditions.

Required Tests and Reports

Required continuity, short-circuit, insulation resistance, dielectric withstand, dimensional inspection, test report or other project-specific acceptance requirements.

Identification

Labels, heat-shrink identification, wire numbers, serial markings or customer-specified part numbers.

Quantity

Prototype quantity, initial order quantity and expected annual production volume.

Inspection and Testing Options

Inspection and test requirements are confirmed according to the approved drawing and project specification. Available checks may include connector identification, dimensional inspection, pinout verification, continuity testing, short-circuit testing, insulation resistance testing, dielectric withstand testing and visual inspection of the backshell, heat-shrink or overmolded area.

Required acceptance criteria, test voltage, test duration, documentation format and sampling plan should be specified before quotation.

Compliance and Documentation

The use of a connector part number associated with a military specification does not automatically mean that the completed cable assembly is qualified or certified to that specification. Unless explicitly stated and documented, qualification should not be assumed from the connector series or part number alone. Required connector manufacturer, component traceability, inspection records, test reports, first-article documentation and other compliance requirements should be confirmed before quotation.

FAQ

Q: Can you manufacture a cable based on an MS or VG connector part number?

A: Yes. We can evaluate the cable assembly based on complete MS, VG or connector-manufacturer part numbers. Both cable-end part numbers, the required pinout and the cable length should be provided whenever possible.

Q: Do P and S mean plug and receptacle?

A: For the 5015 and 26482 Series examples shown on this page, P and S identify pin and socket contact types. Plug and receptacle describe the connector shell style and must be identified separately. Other connector families should be confirmed against their applicable part-number documentation.

Q: Can both ends of a cable use plug connectors?

A: Yes. A cable assembly may use plug shells on both ends, with pin contacts on one end and socket contacts on the other. Each cable end must be checked against its intended mating receptacle, including the connector series, shell size, insert arrangement, contact type and alternate insert position.

Q: Can you make connector-to-open-wire cable assemblies?

A: Yes. Open-wire ends can be evaluated with stripped, tinned, ferruled or specified terminal terminations. Availability depends on the conductor size, terminal requirement and approved cable drawing.

Q: Can the cable length and pinout be customized?

A: Yes. Cable length, conductor assignment and pin-to-pin wiring can be customized. Please provide the required length datum and a complete wiring table.

Q: Are these cable assemblies MIL-DTL qualified?

A: Qualification depends on the specified connector components, cable materials, manufacturing requirements, testing and required documentation. Compliance is confirmed on a project-by-project basis and should not be assumed from the connector series name or part number alone.

Q: What information is required for a quotation?

A: Please provide the complete connector part numbers for both ends, cable length, pinout, electrical requirements, conductor construction, shielding, connector or backshell orientation, environmental conditions, testing requirements and quantity. Drawings, photos and physical samples are also helpful.

Q: Can you support prototypes before volume production?

A: Prototype and sample requirements can be evaluated according to connector availability, tooling requirements, cable construction and project complexity.
