Advantages

1. Communication mode:

Half-duplex communication: RS485 protocol adopts half-duplex communication mode, that is, the two communicating parties can send and receive information in turns, but not at the same time. This mode simplifies the hardware design and the implementation of the communication protocol, and is suitable for most industrial applications.

2. Signal transmission:

Differential signal transmission: RS485 uses differential signal transmission to transmit data through the voltage difference of two signal lines. This method has strong anti-electromagnetic interference ability, making data transmission more stable and reliable, especially suitable for industrial sites with large noise environment.

3. Physical structure:

Balanced driver and differential receiver: The RS485 protocol adopts a combination design of balanced driver and differential receiver, which further enhances the anti-interference performance and ensures the accuracy and stability of data transmission.

4. Multi-device connection:

Multi-point communication capability: RS485 bus can connect multiple devices, and the existing RS485 chip supports drivers for connecting 32, 64, 128, 256 and other different devices. It is suitable for scenarios where multiple devices need to be interconnected, such as industrial automation and building control systems. This multi-point communication capability makes RS485 widely used in complex systems.

5. Data transmission speed:

High data rate: The RS485 protocol supports data transmission rates up to 10 Mbps, which can meet the needs of high-speed data transmission and is suitable for application scenarios that require fast data exchange.

6. Transmission distance:

Long-distance transmission: Under low transmission rates (such as below 100KB/s), the transmission distance of RS485 can reach 1200 meters. This long-distance transmission capability gives RS485 a clear advantage in applications that require long-distance communication. A longer transmission distance can be achieved by using a repeater.

7. System stability:

Stable and reliable operation: The RS485 system can operate stably for a long time and is suitable for applications that require high-reliability communication.

8. Dedicated communication line:

Dedicated wired communication: RS485 uses a dedicated wired communication line, with only communication signals on the line, and external interference signals are greatly attenuated. This enables the system to transmit data at a higher rate to ensure communication quality.

Disadvantages

1. Communication mode restrictions:

Does not support full-duplex: RS485 protocol only supports half-duplex communication mode, and both parties cannot send and receive data at the same time. There are limitations in applications that require real-time two-way communication.

2. Complex wiring:

Large wiring workload: RS485 system requires laying dedicated communication lines, especially when the equipment is dispersed, the wiring workload is large and complex, affecting the convenience and orderliness of construction. For some installation environments, the complexity and time cost of wiring are high.

3. High maintenance cost:

High line maintenance requirements: The communication lines of RS485 system need to be regularly inspected and maintained to ensure their normal operation. Line damage (such as breakage or corrosion) will directly affect the communication effect and need to be repaired or replaced in time. This increases the later maintenance cost and workload of the system, especially the maintenance of external exposed lines.

RS485 protocol excels in anti-interference ability, communication speed and transmission distance, and is widely used in fields that require high-reliability communication, such as industrial automation and building control. However, its half-duplex communication mode, complex wiring requirements and high maintenance costs may pose challenges in certain application scenarios. When choosing a communication protocol, the advantages and disadvantages of RS485 should be comprehensively considered according to the specific application requirements to ensure that the most suitable solution is selected.
