1. What is NMEA 2000 bus?
NMEA 2000 (National Marine Electronics Association 2000) is a set of marine electronic equipment communication protocol standards developed by the National Marine Electronics Association of the United States. This standard is used to connect various marine electronic equipment, such as GPS receivers, autopilots, wind speed and direction sensors, depth sonars, and other types of sensors and controllers. The NMEA 2000 protocol allows these devices to share data such as navigation, position, depth, speed, wind speed and direction, etc.
NMEA 2000 connectors are the physical interface used to connect NMEA 2000 devices to the network. They have a specific shape and size, designed to prevent incorrect insertion, and provide a waterproof and vibration-resistant interface. They are typically five-pin connectors corresponding to the five lines of the NMEA 2000 protocol: CAN High, CAN Low, Power, Ground, and Shield. These connectors may be micro or medium, depending on the needs of the device and installation.
2. NMEA 2000 Connector Types
1. NMEA 2000 Micro C-Connector
This is the most common NMEA 2000 connector and is also the standard connector. It uses a five-pin connector and is used to connect various NMEA 2000 devices such as sensors, controllers, and displays.
2. NMEA 2000 Micro T-Connector
This connector also uses a five-pin connector, but the shape is slightly different, with a "T" shape, which is used to connect different branches in the network.
3. NMEA 2000 Micro M-Type Connector
This connector is also a five-pin connector, similar to the Micro C-Type connector, but with the opposite gender. It is usually used to connect to the power cable on the device.
4. NMEA 2000 Micro F-Type Connector
This connector is also a five-pin connector, similar to the Micro M-Type connector, but with the opposite gender. It is usually used to connect to the power cable on the device.
5. NMEA 2000 Micro Male-Type Connector
This connector is a five-pin connector with a direct-connect port, and is typically used to connect the same-sex interface of sensors and devices.
6. NMEA 2000 Micro Female-Type Connector
This connector is a five-pin connector with a female port, and is typically used to connect the opposite-sex interface of sensors and devices.

4. NMEA 2000 Cable Dielectric Characteristics
NMEA 2000 cable is a transmission medium used to connect NMEA 2000 devices and networks, and has the following characteristics:
1. Physical characteristics
NMEA 2000 cable is usually composed of one or more pairs of twisted wires, which are wrapped in a protective sheath to provide physical strength and durability of the cable. The protective sheath is usually waterproof and corrosion-resistant to meet the requirements of the marine environment.
2. Length and size
The length and size of NMEA 2000 cables can be customized as needed. Generally speaking, the cable length ranges from a few feet to tens of feet, but it can also be extended or shortened according to specific installation needs. In addition, the diameter of the cable can also be adjusted as needed to fit different installation spaces.
3. Connectors
NMEA 2000 cables are usually equipped with specific NMEA 2000 connectors, such as Micro C-type connectors. These connectors have specific shapes and sizes for proper connection and plugging of NMEA 2000 devices and networks.

TECH TIP
NMEA Components-cables and connectors must pass NMEA approval to guarantee that they are manufactured to standards which allow them to be universally used with any manufacturers approved components and certified devices.
NMEA Devices-must certified to run the universal NMEA 2000communications protocols to be used universally between different manufacturers' devices.
4. Transmission characteristics
NMEA 2000 cables generally use the CAN (Controller Area Network) bus transmission protocol and have high-speed and reliable data transmission capabilities. It can support high-speed data transmission and broadcast data over a large range so that multiple devices can share and access data.
5. Shielding and anti-interference performance
NMEA 2000 cables generally have anti-interference capabilities to reduce the impact of external electromagnetic interference on transmission quality. The shielding design of the cable can effectively prevent interference from interference signals and noise, ensuring the stability and reliability of data transmission.
All in All
Overall, NMEA 2000 cables have features such as high reliability, high-speed transmission, and waterproofing to meet the requirements needed to connect and transmit marine electronic devices in a marine environment.
