Absolute encoders

Absolute Encoder is a sensor that can provide a unique position value. It can still maintain the encoding value of the current position after power failure or restart, which is different from the incremental encoder (Incremental Encoder) which counts from zero every time it is powered on.

How it works:

Absolute Encoder uses optical, magnetic or capacitive technologies in a multi-turn or single-turn encoding system to convert the angle of the rotating shaft into a certain digital signal (such as Gray encoding, binary, BCD, SSI protocol, etc.). This value represents the "absolute" position of the shaft.

Common connector types (depending on brand, model, communication protocol):

1. Circular connector (industrial standard)

  • M12 (A coding / B coding / D coding / X coding) is commonly used for digital output / Ethernet interface (such as EtherCAT, Profinet), and is commonly used in waterproof and dustproof requirements such as IP67.

  • M23 is commonly used for high current power supply and multi-channel signal transmission (such as multi-turn encoders), and is commonly used in high-end servo systems.

  • 7/8" circular connectors are used for power supply and are common in North American industry.

2. Square connectors (industrial standard)

  • D-sub (such as 9-pin, 15-pin) are used for communication interfaces such as SSI, RS-422, CANopen, and are common on high-precision encoders such as Heidenhain and Baumer.

  • Harting Han-type connectors are used for heavy-duty connections and modular installation systems.

3. RJ45 / ix Industrial / M12 X-coded

  • RJ45 / ix Industrial / M12 X-coded connectors are used for encoders with Ethernet protocols, such as EtherCAT, PROFINET, and EtherNet/IP.

4. Special connectors

  • Some encoder brands (such as SICK, Heidenhain, Renishaw) use their own proprietary plugs or open lead connections.

  • Multi-core cable connectors (6-core, 8-core, 12-core, etc.).
