What Is USCAR-30 ? Which Connectors Apply ?

USCAR-30 is a performance specification for automotive USB connection systems. It addresses the connectors and cables used to establish USB connections in road vehicles. Automotive Mini USB products are familiar examples, but USCAR-30 is broader than a name for one Mini-B connector.

Which connectors are associated with it? Documented commercial examples include Molex HSAutoLink, TE Connectivity USCAR 30 Mini USB and SMK USCAR-30. Their products include cable-side and board-side interfaces. Exact part numbers, housing codes and mating combinations remain essential when selecting an assembly.

What Is the Scope of USCAR-30 ?

Its formal title is Performance Specification for Automotive Universal Serial Bus (USB) Connection System. SAE describes performance testing during development, production and field analysis.

The scope concerns USB cable assemblies and associated connections between a peripheral interface and the USB host in road vehicles. The procedures apply to USB connectors and cables. Unless otherwise specified, both consumer and nonconsumer interface connectors are addressed.

The SAE catalog lists USCAR30-1, stabilized in July 2023. Project documents should identify the required revision.

Which Connector Structures Are Involved ?

2 1

A vehicle USB connection can contain a cable plug, an inline cable receptacle or a board-mounted receiving connector. The consumer-facing port and the internal equipment connection serve different installation roles.

Mini-B is a specific Mini USB interface type. In automotive versions, the outer housing, latch and polarization form part of the mating arrangement. USB Type-A receptacles also appear in documented automotive USB assemblies.

These structures describe connection roles. They do not mean that every Mini-B plug, Type-A receptacle or board header meets USCAR-30.

Connection Structure Role in an Automotive USB Assembly
Cable side Mini-B plug Terminates a cable at the specified polarized receiving interface
Mini-B inline receptacle Forms a cable-to-cable connection with the specified mating plug
PCB header or receptacle Connects the cable assembly to an equipment circuit board
USB Type-A receptacle Forms the accessible port in documented Type-A to Mini-B automotive assemblies

Molex HSAutoLink Connector Examples

Molex identifies its HSAutoLink interconnect system as USCAR-30 compliant. Published configurations include Mini-B plug to Mini-B plug, Mini-B plug to inline receptacle, and USB Type-A receptacle to Mini-B plug assemblies.

Examples appear in Molex series 111014, 111005 and 111015 respectively. These examples show how the system connects cable side, inline and consumer port interfaces.

For an order, verify the exact part drawing and housing polarization. A family level compliance statement does not automatically apply to a separately manufactured compatible cable.

TE Connectivity and SMK Connector Examples

2 1

TE Connectivity markets a USCAR 30 Mini USB family for automotive data connections. One documented example is 2294731-2, a shielded, five position, horizontal B Code board-mounted header. Its receiving interface must be matched to the specified cable plug.

SMK lists a five pin USCAR-30 connector series and states conformity with USCAR-30 and USB 2.0. Its published options include different colors and key codes.

These are manufacturer-documented examples, not an exhaustive list. A common reference to USCAR-30 does not by itself establish that parts from different manufacturers can mate.

What Performance Does the Specification Address ?

Performance validation goes beyond recognizing the connector shape. The selected connection must be assessed using the applicable specification revision and the project test plan.

For example, Molex product specification PS-68800-001 references USCAR-30 procedures for visual inspection, critical dimensions, mating forces, latch feedback and polarization effectiveness. These supplier examples illustrate evaluation topics rather than a complete checklist.

When requesting compliance evidence, confirm the tested part numbers, cable configuration and mating combination. Ask whether the report covers a component, a finished cable assembly or the complete mated connection.

Are All Automotive Data Connectors Covered ?

USCAR-30 should not be used as a general label for every automotive high-speed connector. HSD, H-MTD, MATEnet, Mini-FAKRA and automotive USB Type-C identify other connector systems or interface formats. Their applicable requirements need to be checked in the exact product documentation.

A shared specification reference also does not guarantee cross-brand interchangeability. Mechanical dimensions, contact layout, housing code, shielding and approved mating details must be reviewed together.

PCM-ZC-0267 Mini-B B Code male to 12 pin male Molex 111014-9001 and 111146-3080

Mini-B to HSD and multipin versions are mixed-interface equipment harnesses. Their inclusion here illustrates related connection options, not additional connector families automatically covered by USCAR-30. Confirm the wiring, intended protocol and validation requirements for the complete assembly.

Request an Automotive USB Cable Quotation

Send Premier Cable the connector references or clear photographs of both interfaces, together with cable length, quantity and pin assignment. Include the housing code and any original connector sourcing requirements.

If USCAR-30 compliance is required, identify the document revision and required test evidence at the enquiry stage so the proposed assembly and validation scope can be reviewed.

Notes: Confirm pin assignment before production.
