How to Build IX Industrial and RJ45 Panel Interfaces for Compact Automation Equipment
Choose the right external Ethernet interface for industrial equipment: IX In-line Jack for compact IX connectivity, or RJ45 Keystone for standard field service and network integration.
In compact automation equipment, an Ethernet port is often located deep inside a cabinet, controller or machine enclosure. A defined panel-mount interface makes installation, service and network integration more repeatable than leaving a loose cable inside the equipment.
Should the external machine interface remain a compact IX Industrial port, or should it become a familiar RJ45 Keystone Ethernet port?
This guide compares IX In-line Jack and RJ45 Keystone panel-interface cable assemblies, explains their internal-to-external connection paths, and shows how to select straight, 90° upward and 90° downward IX cable exits.

Why Use a Panel-Mount Ethernet Interface?
Industrial switches, embedded IPCs, machine vision controllers and motion-control devices are often installed inside enclosures where their original Ethernet ports are difficult to reach. A panel-mount cable assembly relocates the interface to a serviceable and repeatable position on the machine exterior.
Instead of leaving a loose extension cable inside the cabinet, the equipment manufacturer can define one external connection point for installation, commissioning, maintenance and network expansion.
The correct solution depends on the interface expected outside the equipment: a compact IX Industrial port or a standard RJ45 Keystone Ethernet port.
IX vs RJ45: Choose the External Port First
Before choosing cable length or connector orientation, decide what port the machine user needs to access outside the enclosure.
| External Interface Needed | Recommended Solution | Typical Use Case |
|---|---|---|
| IX Industrial external port | IX In-line Jack cable assembly | Compact equipment that keeps IX as its external industrial Ethernet standard |
| Standard RJ45 service or network port | IX-to-RJ45 Keystone cable assembly | Equipment using IX internally but RJ45 externally for field service or existing infrastructure |
| Internal RJ45 device, external IX interface | RJ45 male to IX In-line Jack cable assembly | OEM equipment upgrading its external interface without changing internal RJ45 electronics |
Important: These assemblies are passive Ethernet cable solutions. They change the mechanical interface and cable routing; they do not convert Ethernet protocols.
PCM-HD-0145: Extend an IX Industrial Port to the Equipment Panel
PCM-HD-0145
PCM-HD-0145 is designed for equipment that already uses IX Industrial Ethernet internally and needs to bring that same IX connection to an accessible point on the enclosure. One end connects to an IX A-Key device port, while the other end provides an IX In-line Jack for an external machine interface.
This configuration is useful when the machine designer wants to keep a compact IX interface both inside and outside the equipment rather than converting the external port to RJ45.
Typical applications: compact industrial switches, embedded IPCs, machine vision systems, industrial cameras, robotics controllers, edge devices and control cabinets.

PCM-HD-0151: Convert an Internal RJ45 Connection into an External IX Interface
PCM-HD-0151
PCM-HD-0151 is intended for OEM equipment designs where an internal switch, IPC or controller uses a conventional RJ45 Ethernet port, but the external machine interface needs to be compact IX Industrial.
The RJ45 male plug connects inside the enclosure. The IX In-line Jack is placed at the external equipment panel, allowing the manufacturer to retain existing internal RJ45 hardware while presenting a compact IX Industrial interface outside the machine.
Typical applications: embedded industrial PCs, compact machine controllers, machine vision processing units, robot controllers, motion-control systems and modernization projects.

IX to RJ45 Keystone Cable Options
PCM-HD-0290, PCM-HD-0291 and PCM-HD-0293 are designed for equipment that uses IX Industrial internally but needs a standard RJ45 Keystone connection point on the outside of the machine.
All three provide the same basic IX A-Key to RJ45 Keystone interface. The selection difference is mechanical: straight, 90° upward or 90° downward cable routing at the IX end.
PCM-HD-0290: Straight IX A-Key to RJ45 Keystone Jack
PCM-HD-0290
PCM-HD-0290 is the standard option when the IX connector can exit straight from the internal device without creating interference. The IX A-Key plug connects to the equipment, while the RJ45 Keystone jack provides a convenient standard Ethernet interface at the panel or modular mounting area.
Choose this configuration when: there is enough clearance behind the IX port, the cable can leave in a straight path, and a standard RJ45 service or network connection is required outside the enclosure.

PCM-HD-0291: 90° Upward IX A-Key to RJ45 Keystone Jack
PCM-HD-0291
PCM-HD-0291 uses a right-angle IX A-Key connector with upward cable routing and an RJ45 Keystone jack at the other end. It is intended for layouts where a straight cable exit or lower cable route would conflict with cabinet hardware, wire ducts, terminal blocks or nearby modules.
Selection note: CVL2 refers to the right-angle upward-cabling configuration. Always confirm the actual installed orientation of the mating receptacle, Pin 1 reference and final cable route before ordering.

PCM-HD-0293: 90° Downward IX A-Key to RJ45 Keystone Jack
PCM-HD-0293
PCM-HD-0293 uses a right-angle IX A-Key connector with downward cable routing and an RJ45 Keystone jack at the other end. It is designed for compact cabinet layouts where the cable should route directly into a lower wire duct, lower enclosure area or cable-management path.
Selection note: CVL1 refers to the right-angle downward-cabling configuration. Verify the mating-face view, Pin 1 reference, cabinet clearance and cable bend radius before confirming the product orientation.

Straight vs 90° Up vs 90° Down: Selection Guide
PCM-HD-0290, PCM-HD-0291 and PCM-HD-0293 solve the same basic interface requirement: IX A-Key internally and RJ45 Keystone externally. Their real difference is cable routing at the IX connector.
| IX Connector Style | Product | Best Installation Condition | Primary Benefit |
|---|---|---|---|
| Straight | PCM-HD-0290 | Clear space behind the IX port | Simple cable routing and broad installation flexibility |
| 90° Upward / CVL2 | PCM-HD-0291 | Lower area blocked; cable needs to route toward the top | Reduces lower-side congestion |
| 90° Downward / CVL1 | PCM-HD-0293 | Cable needs to enter a lower wire duct or cabinet zone | Reduces side clearance and supports tidy downward routing |
Orientation warning: "Upward" and "downward" should be verified against the connector drawing and the installed receptacle orientation. A receptacle rotated on the machine can reverse the expected cable route.
Keystone Jack vs Standard RJ45 Female Jack
A standard RJ45 female cable end is useful for service access or a flexible extension point. An RJ45 Keystone jack is usually better when the Ethernet connection needs to be retained in a modular panel, faceplate, enclosure opening or structured-cabling interface.
IX In-line Jack
Best for an external IX Industrial machine interface where compact equipment and IX field cabling are expected.
RJ45 Keystone Jack
Best for standard Ethernet service, easy patch-cord use and modular panel integration.
RJ45 Female Cable End
Best for service, commissioning or a standard Ethernet extension point that does not need a fixed Keystone panel structure.
