Internal Luminaire Wiring Selection Guide
How to Choose Internal Luminaire Connectors: 5-Pole vs 7-Pole, Pluggable vs Push-In
A practical guide for LED linear-light, luminaire and LED driver manufacturers selecting internal plug-and-base connectors, two-piece pluggable connectors and push-in terminal blocks.
Internal luminaire connectors create defined wiring interfaces inside LED linear lights, commercial luminaires, LED driver assemblies and lighting modules. They are different from outdoor waterproof connectors, extension leads and general-purpose wire-to-wire plugs: the finished luminaire drawing, conductor size, terminal identification, available housing space and assembly method must all be checked before a connector is released for production.
Important: Pole count alone does not determine whether a connector is suitable. A 7-pole model is not automatically a better version of a 5-pole model. Select around the actual circuit layout, terminal reference marks, conductor range, mechanical envelope and whether the wiring interface must be separable after assembly.

Quick Selection Checklist Before You Buy
A reliable selection starts with the finished luminaire wiring design rather than product appearance. Use this checklist before finalizing the light housing, internal wire harness, LED driver location or production assembly process.
| Check Item | What to Confirm | Why It Matters |
|---|---|---|
| Wiring architecture | Decide whether the fixture needs a plug-and-base interface, a two-piece separable connector or a fixed terminal block. | The assembly and service method determines the connector family before pole count is considered. |
| Number of positions | Confirm the exact number of independent connection positions required by the circuit drawing. | Extra poles do not solve an incorrect wiring plan or an incompatible terminal layout. |
| Terminal identification | Check whether the design requires marked positions such as L, N, PE, 1, 2, 3, + or −. | Housing marks help assembly, but the final electrical function must follow the finished luminaire drawing. |
| Conductor range | Match every wiring zone to its stated conductor range. | A conductor suitable for one zone may not fit another terminal area in the same assembly. |
| Wire preparation | Confirm stripping length, insertion direction and any release-button operation. | Controlled wire preparation supports consistent assembly and reduces terminal errors. |
| Housing clearance | Check connector body size, wire-entry path, mating direction and bend space inside the fixture. | A correct electrical rating does not guarantee mechanical fit in the luminaire cavity. |
Three Internal Lighting Connection Architectures
The five products in this guide are not the same connector in different pole counts. They represent three internal wiring approaches. Choose the architecture that matches the luminaire design first, then select the correct pole count and conductor range.
Architecture 1
Plug-and-Base LED Linear Light Connectors
This structure combines a main plug body with a matching base. It is designed for LED linear-light assemblies that need a defined internal interface instead of a loose wire-to-wire joint.
- Use the matching plug and base as a corresponding set.
- Confirm separate wire ranges for the base and small-terminal zones.
- Products covered: PCM-LBK-5P and PCM-LBK-7P.
Architecture 2
Two-Piece Pluggable Luminaire Connectors
This format creates a separable mating point between two internal wiring sections, such as a luminaire body, LED driver assembly or lighting module.
- Useful for modular assembly, inspection and replacement.
- Confirm matching halves, orientation and terminal sequence.
- Products covered: PCM-2067-5P and PCM-2067-7P.
Architecture 3
Push-In Luminaire Terminal Blocks
A push-in terminal block is a fixed wire-termination point. It supports screwless assembly but does not create a matching plug-and-socket interface between two luminaire sections.
- Useful for fixed internal wiring inside luminaires and LED driver assemblies.
- Confirm conductor size, strip length and release-button access.
- Product covered: PCM-935-5P.
5 Pole LED Linear Light Connector
7 Pole LED Linear Light Connector
Pluggable Connector vs Push-In Terminal Block
The key difference is whether the luminaire design needs a separable interface. A pluggable connector lets two prepared wiring sections mate and separate at a defined point. A push-in terminal block is intended as a fixed internal termination point.
| Comparison Item | Pluggable Luminaire Connector | Push-In Terminal Block |
|---|---|---|
| Connection method | Two matching halves form a separable internal interface. | Wires terminate directly in a fixed terminal body. |
| Best fit | Modular fixtures, driver-to-body connections and lighting sections assembled separately. | Fixed wiring inside compact luminaires, LED drivers and lighting modules. |
| Assembly benefit | Supports separate assembly, testing and controlled mating of two fixture sections. | Supports fast screwless insertion for repeated production wiring. |
| Key checks | Mating compatibility, terminal sequence, orientation and clearance. | Wire range, stripping length, insertion quality and release-button access. |
Choose a pluggable connector when: the light body and driver or module are assembled as separate sections, production requires a defined mate-and-test interface, and the finished drawing defines the terminal sequence and matched connector layout.
Choose a push-in terminal block when: the internal wiring point is intended to remain fixed after assembly, the process benefits from direct screwless insertion, and the work instruction controls wire range, strip length and terminal access.
How to Choose Between 5 Pole and 7 Pole Connectors
The required number of poles is determined by the luminaire circuit diagram. Select a 5-pole connector when the fixture requires five defined positions. Select a 7-pole connector only when the completed design genuinely requires seven corresponding positions and the physical connector arrangement matches the equipment.
PCM-LBK-5P identifies positions L, N, 1, 2 and 3. PCM-2067-7P includes housing reference marks N, PE, 1, 2, 3, + and −. These marks support position identification; they do not replace the final wiring legend or electrical design of the completed luminaire.
Choose 5 Pole When
- The circuit drawing requires five independent positions.
- The fixture housing and harness are designed around a compact five-position interface.
- There is no requirement for an additional pair of marked positions.
Choose 7 Pole When
- The circuit drawing requires seven corresponding positions.
- The project needs the marked or terminal-module arrangement of the selected 7-pole product.
- The fixture cavity has room for connector body and wire routing.
Engineering note: Do not assign circuit functions based only on a connector housing label. Verify every terminal position against the controlled wiring drawing, conductor identification and final luminaire safety requirements.
Conductor Range and Wiring Preparation
Conductor suitability must be checked at the individual connection area. The LBK linear-light connectors use separate base and small-terminal zones. The 2067 pluggable series is specified for 1.5–2.5 mm² conductors. The 935-5P push-in terminal block is specified for 20–12 AWG and uses a 9–10 mm recommended stripping length.
| Product Family | Stated Conductor Range | Wire Preparation | Selection Reminder |
|---|---|---|---|
| PCM-LBK-5P / PCM-LBK-7P | Base: 16–12 AWG Small terminal: 24–18 AWG |
9 mm stripping length | Match base and small-terminal zones separately. |
| PCM-2067-5P / PCM-2067-7P | 1.5–2.5 mm² | Follow product drawing and assembly instruction | Confirm orientation, terminal assignment and specific conductor requirement. |
| PCM-935-5P | 20–12 AWG | Recommended stripping length: 9–10 mm | Confirm spring-clamp engagement and release access in the completed fixture. |

Sample Validation Plan for Luminaire OEMs
A sample should be reviewed in the intended luminaire housing, with the planned wires, LED driver, modules and assembly sequence. This avoids approving a connector only from a bench-fit perspective and finding problems after tooling or the internal cavity design has been finalized.
| # | Validation Item | Reason |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | Check connector body, cable-entry direction and wire bend space in the actual luminaire cavity. | Confirms mechanical fit before production assembly. |
| 2 | Verify every intended conductor against the stated wire range for its own terminal area. | Prevents force-fitting a wire outside the intended range. |
| 3 | Use the specified stripping length and inspect insertion depth before electrical testing. | Supports controlled, repeatable wire preparation. |
| 4 | For pluggable products, mate and unmate the exact connector pair used in the fixture design. | Confirms correct pairing, orientation and retention. |
| 5 | For push-in products, verify wire insertion and release with the planned production work instruction. | Checks practical handling and access inside the fixture. |
| 6 | Perform continuity, terminal-position and protective-earth checks according to the finished luminaire design. | Verifies that the assembly matches the controlled wiring drawing. |
| 7 | Review temperature, voltage, current, safety and approval requirements for the complete lighting product. | Connector data must be evaluated as part of the finished luminaire. |

Frequently Asked Questions
Are these connectors suitable for external LED lighting connections?
These products are positioned for internal luminaire, LED driver, lighting-module and linear-light wiring. Do not treat them as outdoor waterproof connectors or general-purpose external extension interfaces unless the complete project requirements, enclosure design and approvals have been separately reviewed.
Is a 7-pole connector always preferable to a 5-pole connector?
No. Use the pole count required by the finished wiring diagram. A 7-pole product should be selected only when the circuit positions, reference marks, physical connector structure and fixture space match the seven-position design.
What is the practical difference between PCM-2067 and PCM-935?
PCM-2067 is a two-piece pluggable connector family for a separable internal wiring interface. PCM-935 is a fixed push-in spring-clamp terminal block for direct screwless wire termination. Choose according to whether the luminaire design needs a matched plug-and-socket connection after assembly.
What wiring details should be checked for PCM-935-5P?
PCM-935-5P is a 5-pole push-in terminal block rated at 450V and 24A. Check the 20–12 AWG conductor range, 9–10 mm recommended stripping length, 5.2 mm terminal pitch and access to the push-button release in the completed luminaire housing.
